Jugemu opened about two weeks ago on Carlton a couple of blocks west of Parliament. We dined there last night and were enormously impressed by the quality and freshness of the fish. None of us is a sushi expert but you don't have to be one to recognize the excellence and execution of the product served.
For appetizers, we had fish-stock red miso soup, which was exquisite with its delicate broth and small piece of poached fish. The four of us then shared sea bass with yuzu pepper ponzu sauce, marinated red shrimp with spicy sauce, and monkfish liver topped with dabs of miso. It was all delicious, but the sea bass really stood out.
Each of us then had Bando, an 8-piece assortment of "chef-selected" sushi. The standouts here were barracuda, horse mackerel, and uni. Again, each piece of fish was glisteningly fresh and adorned with a minimal amount of lovely sushi rice, a tiny smear of wasabi, and an even less tiny sprinkling of soy sauce on some pieces. Pickled ginger and pickled burdock root (yum!) are served with the sushi; wasabi and soy sauce are not and we did not request any.
The space is small (about 30 seats, including the sushi bar) and the service was delightful. Not cheap, but worth every penny. So happy to live within walking distance.
