J's Pots of Soul, and a poem!

JoyM | Sep 5, 2007 03:43 PM

Yesterday, I posted a request for good chicken wings for my pre-diet fatty food fest ( and received, as usual, more suggestions than I could handle, especially considering that today is the last day before my promise to show up at Weight Watchers.

So, I went with J's Pots of Soul, and it was great. For $10.25, I got 4 big, fat, whole, juicy, delicious, perfectly-fried chicken wings -- just what I was craving -- along with 2 veggie sides (I chose yams and cabbage) and some corn bread. I also got some excellent, somewhat fruity, iced tea. The women who run this place are very friendly, and the service was excellent. This is just the sort of neighborhood hole in the wall that makes me wonder why anyone would ever eat at a chain restaurant.

This was also the zillionth time that the hounds have come through for me, especially one hound in particular, and so I was inspired to write this poem:

Whenever I need someplace to eat
Not west of Van Ness or east of Powell Street
Near the BART or on a bus line
Where the food, drink and ambience are all divine
Which is inexpensive yet near the Opera House
For my picky nephew, toothless grandma and vegetarian spouse

I simply make my needs known
With detailed requirements that would make most people groan
By writing a post and posting to Chowhound
And within minutes an answer will be found
There’re always hounds who know where to go
Where they serve what you seek for not too much dough

And always among the first response to any query
Whether it’s for Haywood, Hercules or Hayes Valley
Is the hound who stands head and shoulders above us all
Whether you want xio long bau, tortellini, or a taco truck crawl
She always has a suggestion and never steers you wrong
She’s the amazing, incredible, indefatigable Melanie Wong

So next time you have guests who don’t eat sushi
Arugula, abalone or any animals with a tushy
Who won’t take the train and can’t abide smells
And must sit in a booth with their baby who yells
And insist that they want to experience the delights
Of the Castro or the Mission, but not Bernal Heights

Just post your request to the San Francisco Board
Where your gastronomical needs are never ignored
No matter how bizarre your request, I guarantee
That in less than an hour you will hear from Melanie
Who has known the perfect place all along
The sensational, omniscient, brilliant Ms. Wong
