Took the gurlfrend out to Josie for a birthday dinner last night, and it was the first time for both of us. We were seated promptly (7:30 reservation) and a very nice hostess took us to a booth in the back dining room.

Service was top notch as we didn't feel rushed all night and the servers were all quite pleasant. We brought a bottle of wine to take advantage of the free corkage. My gurlfrend and I are fairly young and are not wine experts by any means, and we picked out a nice bottle together for Monday's dinner. I had anxieties regarding whether or not the staff would treat us like second class citizens with our wine selection, but the server was comforting and explained that she was familiar with the wine we chose and she thought it was a versatile choice for the evening. Whether or not she was just saying this to make us feel better, it did the trick.

On to the food.

Blood Orange, Beet, Arugula and Warm Goat Cheese Salad - Very good as the beets had a sweet tang and went really well with the smooth taste of the warm goat cheese. I thought the vinaigrette they used was pretty subtle but it really help to complement the flavors of the cheese, oranges, and beets. VERY GOOD.

Truffle Fries (to come with the salad as a starter) - Bits of parmesean and truffle oil add to the flavor of these basic frites. I thought they were pretty good, though I would have to say I prefer the frites at Vert.

The GF had the KC Filet and that came with spinach and sweet potato fries. The Sweet Potato fries were delish and the steak I thought was quite flavorful (I snuck a bite). Even with my GF's preference of medium well - I was quite impressed with the steak.

I opted for the whole trout - which is fried skin on within a cast iron skillet. It is served with a mixture of corn, wax beans, and asparagus bits (kind of like a colorful medley of veggies/succotash). The fish was good - with certain parts a little more charred than others - but I appreciated the fact that she kept the skin on the trout. The veggies lacked a little flavor, but I didn't mind as I was helping my GF out with her sweet potato fries and spinach.

We didn't take dessert as I am not a dessert guy and the GF was simply too full. So to recap....

- Service was great.
- The dishes (we had) were overall pretty good - and match well with the price that they are charging
- I think I can agree with the sentiment that Josie is 'reliable' and is a 'safe bet'. I think the fans of this place hold it up to a high standard, which is to be expected given the buzz that had surrounded it. I think this place will continue to crank out good dishes and can be depended on for a good meal in LA.
