JoMa's Artisan Ice Cream | Murphys - Gold Country

Melanie Wong | Jul 11, 201701:56 AM

JoMa's writes excellent copy for the names of its creative ice cream flavors, e.g., Salty River of Gold or Crunch Time. The 60% butterfat base is from Crystal Creamery and about 20 flavors of ice cream or sorbet are available at a time. I tried several and chose Lemon Snappy (lemon bars) and Black Bear-y (wild mountain blackberry) in a waffle cone. Flavors are intense and not too sweet with low overrun. However, the finish of the ice creams is kind of gummy and cloying. The waffle cone was underbaked.

That said, on a warm day in Gold Country, I was not unhappy to be here. Good thing, as it was a 26-mile drive over winding, scenic roads from East Sonora to downtown Murphys.
