If not Johnnie's, then where?

Evan B. Druce | Sep 14, 200304:04 AM

I go to school at the University of Chicago, and have been getting my Italian beef fix at Mr. Beef. However, since the last time I've eaten Mr. Beef, I've discovered this board, and found that while I agree with your opinions on nearly everything in Chicago (except when it comes to the scant few who say nasty things about Hot Doug's) the consensus around here seems to be that there are better beefs than Mr. Beef in this city. I've read countless posts on Johnnie's Italian Beef in Elmwood Park, but living all the way down in Hyde Park without a car, that could be a trip of more than 90 minutes. So my question is, where should I go for Italian beef within an hour's CTA trip of Hyde Park? Does this Al's Italian Beef on Taylor really measure up, or is there a better alternative lurking somewhere deep in Chicago?
