Just saw this from last week's Times. What other espresso havens have you found in Manhattan?
The motto for Joe, a coffee cafe, is "the art of coffee." And now the art has doubled, with the opening of a branch at 9 East 13th Street; the original location is 141 Waverly Place (Avenue of the Americas). The specialty of the house is a satisfying 12-ounce latte ($3.65) decorated with a pattern of leaves or hearts.
Amanda Byron, the head barista, explained that to create it, all the elements must be perfect: beans ground fresh for exactly six seconds per cup, the water at just the right temperature, the espresso base extracted in 25 seconds and the milk densely foamed to the necessary silkiness. She wiggles the milk's fine "microbubbles" into the shot of espresso to make the design. The result is a thickish, consistent blend of milk and coffee, quite unlike the pallid concoction that passes for latte elsewhere.
Jonathan Rubinstein, who owns Joe, said the new, larger cafe has more space for selling coffee beans and equipment, and for giving classes about coffee."
