Jiu Qing Mian Mian. Taste of Formosa. Taiwanese Restaurant on Clement Street in San Francisco.

Poot | Aug 8, 200501:38 PM

Open for a month, Jiu Qing Mian Mian (roughly, "that old feeling is abiding"), also called Taste of Formosa, is a Kandinsky decorated slick Taiwanese cafe way out in the Richmond fog. I was charmed by the fellow from Guangzhou who waited on us, recognized a waiter from the defunct Taiwan Point who told me that restaurant's owners had moved to Beijing and opened a restaurant there, and chatted in sibilant Taiwanese Mandarin with a gushing waitress. Ate cold cucumbers, a perfect zhua bing (they call it a cong you bing, or scallion pancake, but it's really the pully zhua bing I came to love on Yong Kang Jie), yummy braised tofu (hong shao) and stirfried A cai (a green vegetable now in season that's a bit like skinny lettuce) that really needed more salt. A busy restaurant that does not seem to have been discovered by white people (except me: I'm very white) yet.
