I've always thought Jim and Andy's was charming. Even stopped in there occasionally. Have been trying to go more often recently, ever since the Met Food started packaging all of their peppers and eggplants in plastic and styrofoam and deliberately turning the veggies blemish-side down so you can't see the nasty stuff unless you rip open the packaging (which I encourage you to do before buying them, and then deposit all of the packaging with the stern looking managers at the front of the store who never smile or do much of anything else, while telling them what you think of their thievery and environmental degradation)
I was in Jim and Andy's over the weekend. Andy was smoking, which I've noticed before. Not so nice in a tiny store like that. Cough. Cough. Then, the peppers I bought looked a bit old. For 3-4 bucks per pound. Shoulda just left them, because when I got home, many had mold growing on the inside. Yummers. Everything else was merely mediocre, as it's always been imho.
I know I'm, like, supposed to support the old neighborhood joints and all that, but I find Jim and Andy's to be something of a downer. Is the quality usually this low in everyone else's experience? Do I have a right to ask them not to smoke in their own store? Should I just give up buying veggies in the nabe and wait for freshdirect to start delivering to us lowly folk out in the outer-boro boondocks?
