Jeanty at Jack's

Went there for lunch last week with my boss. She was cool with me eating off her plate, so I got to try everything. Big portions.

I had the smoked salmon - mild smoke, oily (in a good way), onions, capers. I ate it with bread and butter. A bit bland, but still good. Steak tartare followed - all the goodies mixed together with chopped meat, raw egg on top. Yum. Finally apple gallette with rum raisin ice cream. V. good, loved the ice cream, but damn was I full, since I'd also eaten half of my boss's tomato soup - covered with a dome of puff pastry. Rich. Lovely. Sole meuniere with mashed potatoes. Excellent. And lemon tart - not so good - it was a bit tart for my tasted and i am not a huge merenge fan. (is there a u somewhere in merenge?)

Had a good red rhone with the meal. Boss paid, but lunch prices looked reasonable for a nice place in the financial district. Also note, I would recommend against 3 courses unless you can sleep under your desk afterwards:-\

It's nice to find a place that isn't afraid to make classic dishes, i think there is a lot of room for that kind of cooking in this town.

The service was friendly, but not formal, what you would expect from a bistro. I heard someone saying they raided Masa's and Jardinere people to run the place. It must be working because the service was pretty smooth and they had only been open 2 or 3 days at that point.

I found the place very comfortable, a worthy sucessor (with better food) to Jack's. Does anyone know if they decided against the @, or was it just a rumor? Either way, I'm glad its gone, the @ is sooo 2 years ago.
