My boyfriend is celebrating his 30th birthday this Friday and in the past has mentioned wanting to go to a Michelin 3-starred restaurant. Living in Ohio, there aren't any nearby :) But, I thought - one star for each decade, so I'm surprising him with a flight Friday afternoon (he has no idea we are leaving town) to NYC to eat at Jean Georges and then we're flying home the next morning. We'd stay the weekend but he doesn't know we are going and made additional birthday weekend plans Saturday night.
Here's the thing - I am a very unadventurous eater - I eat steak, potatoes, chicken, potatoes - :) no sauce, no spice . . . . I can't decide whether to go all in and try the tasting menu along with my boyfriend (I'm sure that he'll get the winter tasting menu or Jean Georges favorites tasting menu) or to try the prix fixe and choose the least objectionable so to speak of the three categories which would still be adventurous for me. I don't want to be rude by not eating much of the tasting menu if I turn out not to like something. On the other hand, I am open to taking at least a bite of anything and maybe the experience of the tasting menu is something I should do at least once? I also am not sure if it'd be awkward timing if he has a full tasting menu and I'm doing three courses?
I want my very adventurous eating boyfriend (he has tried everything including freshly killed snake in an Asian jungle) to have a great time and enjoy his birthday meal but I also want to make it as good of an experience for me as possible b/c this dinner is costing a lot between the flights, hotel and food for literally 14 hours in NYC including sleep :)
