I had a great time this past summer in Japan centered around 8 day trip to Hokkaido. We also stayed 3 days in Tohoku 5 days in tokyo.
I've been to Japan twice prior to this trip, focused around the kanto and kansai areas, so really wanted to see other parts of Japan.
With a family with 4 young children, summer vacation is the only time we can arrange for a long trip so Haokkaido with it's cooler climate in the summer was ideal.
It really wored out wells as we had a great time. Here's a rough outline:
Days 1-2 Tokyo - land in narita and stayed at the disney miracostca hotel. Family enjoyed tokyo disney and disneysea while i enjoyed some of the dinig options there like magellan, ss columbia, and oceano.
Days 3-4 - asahikawa - picked up rental car. ate shoyu ramen as it's the highlight in asahikawa. Stayed at ryokan in asahidake and had kaiseki. When to Aasahikawa zoo and more shoyu ramen at ramen village before handed to Biei and furano.
Days 4-5 - Furano/Biei - enjoyed this small town more than i thought i would. Thought it only would have lavender fields, narrow roads, and trees, but it was charming. Stayed in Furano in a lovely place called Chalet Fuyuri. Had great food such as soup curry, regualr curry, hokkaido beef sashimi, sushi. Saw lots of sight seeing like 3D mueseum, cheese factory, blue pond, waterfall and the usual melon frams and lavender fields people note.
Days 5-7 - Sapporo/Otaru/Yoichi - stayed in grand sapporo hotel. Had crab meal at Kani Honke and miso ramen in the alley. Went on day trips to Otaru and had cheese cake, uni/squid ink ice cream, whole fried chicken. Did usual canel sightseeing. Did day trip to Yoichi to Nikka whiskey factory.
Day 7-9 Shatokan/niseko - drove to beautiful Shatokan and had amzing uni don and hiked aling scenic cape Kamui. Amzing views of a beautiful coast. Went to say at hightlight of trip.. zaborin ryokan in niseko. It was amazing and the food served has to be experienced. Glad we stayed 2 nights here. Must be seen and will do full writeup of this amazing ryokan soon on my blog. Went to nearby tomaru for amusement park and tree treking as day trips during stay for the family in the afternoon while in morning and evening soaked and hnwind at the ryokan.
Days 9-10 - hakodate - drove to hakodate to return car. Had ship ramen which city is known for. Visit beer mueseum and did sightseeing. In morning went to morning market for breakfast. Went on Shinkansen to sendai.
Days 10-11 - sendai - stayed at another ryokan in matsushima. Dis sightseeing of beautiful lime stone islands and coastline. Soaked in aonsen and had kaiseki dinner
Days 11-12 - mt. Zao- got back to sendai to be picked up at station to our next ryokan at mt.zao. Stayed at chikusenso, and was another amazing and beautiful ryokan. In fact had whole place to ourselves. Treated extremely nicely by staff and the meal was great.
Days 12-15 tokyo - took shinkansen back to tokyo and stayed at Capitol Tokyou. Booked reservations at some michelin palces like l'efference, and Jiro. Met with local friends for dinner and other usual stuff.
Overall, Hokkaido was amazing. I would definitely go again and see other parts of the area that i couldnt fit in
