Jan's Deli-to-go

dargie | Mar 8, 200408:52 PM

(I tried posting this a couple of weeks ago, but apparently when I ran up against a maintenance message on submitting it, that was a signal that the post had been lost. If it popped up again later, I haven't found it. Gonna try again.)

Jan's Deli is one of those places that ends up in a best-kept-secrets listing. They've been in the neighborhood for years, first up north on Elston and now over on Montrose, just off of Elston. (4040 W. Montrose) Not only do they serve consistently good sandwiches, but the daily specials are amazing, as well as amazingly cheap. For $6 I got a piece of perfectly broiled salmon filet that was too big to finish, a huge portion of perfectly seasoned rice, and three veggies. Another day I got an almost fork-tender fried pork chop with mashed potatoes and gravy, and a salad.

Sherry does a special four days a week (Tu-Fri. they're closed on weekends right now, but will be opening on Saturday later in the year.) and it pays to get there early, or call to have her save you a serving because they often sell out by lunchtime. Right now she's doing soup every day, but when the weather warms up, that'll stop. She does killer subs, and one of the best tuna melts I've ever eaten.

Jan's is a tiny place, and most people carry out their food, but you can eat in if you like. It's cheerful and clean, and the people are really nice. You can phone ahead to find out what's on special: 773-202-9700. They're only open 'til 3 p.m. each day, so phone early.
