Stopped in for a late supper last night at the newly reopened Jaipur Palace on Hubbard St. across from Shaw's. Although it now bills itself as pan-Asian, that's only at lunch, when a side room, called the Spice Cafe, opens for sandwiches and other light fare. At night, the dining room serves the same Indian food as always, with the addition of an extensive vegetarian buffet. My companion ordered a biryani and I selected chicken tikka masala; both were wonderful. The biryani was moist and flavorful, the tikka was rich and satisfying. Garlic nan was perfect to sop up the flavorful sauce. In my opinion Jaipur, despite its side street location and downtown prices, is one of Chicago's finest Indian restaurants. Sure, some may not want to fork over almost twice the ticket of many Devon eateries, but I think its assertive, confident cooking stands with the very best this city has to offer.
