Jackson Heights notes

Hi, just a few notes from my New Years weekend:

On the 31st my search for a dessert for our New Years Eve dinner brought me to La Nueva bakery on 37th near 86th -- My friend Ana's favorite bakery in the neighborhood but I haven't been there very often. I'm glad I went yesterday; bought a slice of truly superior pound cake and a very tasty (and fresh!) alfajore -- alfajores are a broad class of sandwich cookies with dulce de leche filling; this one had a cakey outside and was dipped in chocolate. Also, I tried one of their empanadas and was very pleased with it.

We walked to La Flor this morning for New Years brunch but found they were closed; oh well -- we went to Krystal's and had wonderful chicken soup (sinampulang manok) with tamarind broth and eggplant, and crispy pata which I liked way better than Ihawan's, the only other crispy pata I've had -- it's deep fried pig's knuckles. If you split them open there is a little cache of wonderfully tender, flavorful meat hidden in between all the bone and fat.

On our way back we were sorry to see Tibetan Yak empty. But they finally wised up and hung their NY Times review in the window -- hopefully it is not too late.
