Man, I have been meaning to write for some time about a somewhat obscure joint on 5th Avenue. Jack's is a divey little place with REALLY great food. Until recently, I never actually at there, but ordered in. Each meal was consistently delicious! The have a brisket sandwich for lunch that you can order for dinner for a few more extra dollars. It's not fancy, but hearty like a sandwich your grandmother would make with leftovers. I have also had the grilled chicken which is flavorful and comes with spinach w/ sauteed garlic. The 3 times we order from there we got a free dessert (unexpectedly). The other night we ate in the actual restauraunt. The place is a total whole in the wall and almost depressing. But again the food was excellent. I had grilled hangar steak with grilled carmelized onions and mushrooms. The steak was served with mashed cheddar bacon potatoes which I tried not to eat and ended up finishing. It was so food I asked the waiter to tell the chef (which I never do).
I am not giving this place as much justice as it deserves. It is a gem and I am afraid because how it looks and what Park Slopers like to see in a restaurant (chic. trendy places) it will be ignored.
And...the new pizza place on the 3rd between 4th and 5th next to Stone Park is worth checking out. I love their mushroom pie. The mushrooms are fresh and it seems like a mixed assortment of funghi. I never find fresh shrooms at a local pizza place. Also, the grandma pie is pretty good too.
On a side note, I noticed that Stone Park as a small cheese plate which I am excited to try.
GO TO JACKS!
