Jack and the Beanstalk Organic Tofu (Salinas)

Melanie Wong | Dec 28, 200307:12 PM

Thanks to a tip from “jaweino” about some homemade tofu from Salinas, we tried Jack and the Beanstalk’s fine product on Christmas Eve. I called “Jack”, 831-422-8028, hoping to purchase some from him. However, he doesn’t have a retail license and can’t sell direct. He referred me to Tokyo Food Store (Market?) on San Miguel, just off of South Main Street in Salinas, and not far from my parents’ home. Jack is Korean and makes the tofu fresh each day for delivery to restaurant and retail customers. He makes firm, similar to Chinese style, and regular, which is softer.

Tokyo Food Store carries the regular style. The price was either $1.49 or $1.79 - I bought a number of things including more Ramune. Deliveries come in on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.

My mom heated it with a little chicken stock, and served it plain with just a bit of oyster sauce drizzled on top to not mask the flavor. Even at one+ day old, the tofu had the pure and sweet taste of freshness and a wonderfully silky smooth texture. We liked it very much.
