I went to Ixta last night for a last-minute celebration dinner (just landed a new job :)). It was suggested for its good, strong drinks, and I had read a few positive posts on the board. Well, the drinks are definitely good and strong (and expensive), but I won't be back for the food.
We didn't order appetizers but snacked on the free chips and salsa before dinner came. The chips were interesting--they'd been fried and reminded me a bit of a very salty taco salad shell.
We both ordered the tortilla encrusted mahi mahi ($24). The fish looked good but was incredibly bland, and with the exception of the crisp tortilla crust on top (a bit too crisp in spots), was insipidly soft and textureless. The fish came over a bed of mashed bananas, which, in turn, came over a fried plantain fritter. The roasted bananas were nice but tasted more like dessert than dinner. The fried plantain was almost painfully crispy (i.e. overfried) on the edges) but otherwise unremarkable.
I ordered the sundae for dessert. It was 2 scoops of cinnamon ice cream, served over a peanut butter/caramel hybrid sauce, with a grilled banana (I like bananas, what can I say...), and covered in delicious homemade whipped cream. This dessert wasn't mindblowing, but it definitely hit the spot.
Overall, I found Ixta to be a restaurant whose pretentions (and prices) are higher than its achievements.
