Italian specialty shops

Jill | Mar 26, 2004 09:45 PM

I know there are a few Italian specialty shops around DC, and I'm wondering which ones are the best. I live in Dupont Circle, so anything I can walk to is great, and anything on the red line is good.

There's some place in Cleveland Park that also sells pizza by the slice, where I once went with a non-chowhound friend who complained and wouldn't let me poke around. Is that store any good?

Here are some of the things I'm looking for - a selection of olive oils that aren't ridiculously priced, a tiny little bottle of real balsamic vinegar (with "tradizionale" or whatever in the name), and salt-packed anchovies. Any ideas?

Also, in case anyone else loves anchovies like I do, I tried the ones from Whole Foods on P Street - they keep a platter of them in the glass case that has their olive bar, right near the cheese bit basket. They're in a light lemony marinade, and pretty good. And a mere $26 a pound.
