Italian Pizza @ South Beach Cafe, SF

Melanie Wong | May 9, 200501:15 AM     3

Friday I met a friend at South Beach Cafe for a late lunch. It had been nearly four years since my last time here. The post-dotcom era clientele looked much more relaxed in this edition, though the menu and setting for the cafe were much the same.

I ordered an individual pizza, the one with prosciutto called the South Beach. My companion wondered why I hadn't gone with the margherita as a point of comparison, and in retrospect I think he was the wiser. The amount of cut-too-thick prosciutto on this baby completely overwhelmed everything. I took half of it off to be scarfed up by my meatloving friend. The plain cheese bites with a bit of the basil were delicious. I liked the simple sauce, still light this early in the tomato season, and the cheese proportion was right for me. The crust was not as thin as I expected. Not scorched, it was a bit underfired I think and kinda doughy and anemic in spots. Still I think I would order pizza again here and make sure that it was well-done.
