I have had the pleasure of dining at Iso about 5 times this year and never fail to be dazzled. I feel it gets overlooked on this list by more exotic yet lesser places.
1) Fish quality and variety is unsurpassed. The only places that match the toro quality may be a few of the mid town upscale bars. However, as you guys prob know, toro season is kinda over. Yellowtail is top notch as well. These are my favorites fishes so I stick to them, but my pals are amazed by the salmon, tuna, etc...
2) Size does matter. While not yama size pieces (which I feel are too big, Iso is by far the best bang for the buck as far as top quality goes (I feel the fish quality is better than tomoe, and no wait.)
3) Great sushi bar service. Iso-san, fully recovered from last year's bar veloce shooting, is the master and his young apprentices are skilled. It is refreshing to be able to order from a sushi chef as opposed to from waiters like at Blue Ribbon (which has slid a bunch.)
4) Great cooked items as well- lobster tempura, sauteed scallops, yum!
I have no affiliation with the restaurant but it has always been one of my faves and I feel it gets pretty much ignored. I have been to all the places in nyc and I think that it is better as far as fish quality, service, and value to all of them including jewel bako (karuma zushi is a joke.) Maybe you miss out on some over the top variety- but Iso is the real deal.
I encourage you guys to check it out again.
