ISO: the right place

Kind of a specific, albeit convoluted request here: Am wanting to take S.O. out for a wonderful dining experience that "wows" him. Now, mind you, the wow factor need not be inspired by the food - it may be the location that does it. Or, in his case, the sheer volume of food sometimes does more for him than the quality.

I just want to do something special and nice for my honey, while not breaking the bank. For example, he's been a few times to the Magic Castle, which he just loves for the magic side of things. Now, I can't really spend $10,000 on a membership, and no one has offered up a guest pass. Next....

Geography is not an issue, though L.A. County is preferred.

And since in this case size does matter, if it's a place that costs $100 per person, and they serve you a .02 oz piece of fish or meat with 30 gallons of sauce, I don't think that will be sufficient.

Types of food: anything, though not real big on steak (my apologies to any Texans who gasped at that). He especially loves asian cuisine.

One of the thoughts I had was "happy hour" at the New Otani, as posted on here, as the garden sounds lovely, and that may score in the Wow factor (though the food is so-so, from reading previous posts). Other places I keep hearing good things about and have contemplated include Chloe and Avenue, AOC and that Osteria one (I get them all confused - but the one close to Melrose).

Perhaps it's a place that just has this unique charm, or an owner that is just adorable. Maybe there's an outdoor pation that's heavenly and romantic. Maybe they serve the best darn gnocchi, and it doesn't cost a fortune. Maybe it's a place where if you were taken, you'd feel incredibly special (even though you know I can't spend a fortune on it).

Given all that roundabout info, anything pop to mind? Any place that you find has spectacular food at a good (reasonable) price point? Any remarkable settings, with still decent food?

Thanks for any and all suggestions....
