Looking for a lemon cake recipe, I came across this wonderful blog featuring historical recipes, like pigeon pie, medieval cream of wheat, or Elizabethan wintercakes with ginger, pinenuts, and cherry.
Each recipe is introduced by a quote either from the fantasy novels of George R. R. Martin (author of "Game of Thrones" and "Storm of Swords") or from a historical figure such as Thomas Carlisle or Marcus Aurelius. Next comes a recipe from a historical source, such as Apicius' Roman peaches in honey-cumin sauce ("Persica duriora purgabis, frustratim concides, elixas, in patina compones, olei modicum superstillabis et cum cuminato inferes"), with their comments on the historical recipe. They follow up with a version of the dish tweaked to better suit modern tastes and to make accommodations for modern sources of ingredients. All illustrated with gorgeous photos.
