"Illegal" Thai/Lao returns to West Philly!

Here’s a bit of background information.......A family ran a much-discussed, non-licensed Thai/Loa “restaurant” in the backyard of their rowhouse in West Philly. Back in early summer, I chatted with the father/owner about their new “legal” restaurant venture to open sometime in mid-August in the vicinity of 40-something and Baltimore Avenue.

Fast forward a few months.......on Saturday I drove by the “Vietiane Café” – Yes, I thought, this could be it! Yes, I was going to have green curry! Yes! Oh happy day! But alas, I arrived around 3 o’clock only to find they were closed. So, I peered through the window, dreaming of curry......I saw the hours and thought, maybe, just maybe, I’d call back later when they were open for dinner. Well, I did, and there was no answer.

Here’s the details:

Vietiane Café
4728 Baltimore Avenue – south side of Baltimore Avenue (a couple of blocks below Spruce)
Phila, PA 19143

Hours: Monday through Saturday 11-3, and 5-10, closed Sunday

Small space next to co-op/health food store, seats approximately 25, padded chrome chairs with tables covered in “garden party” floral tablecloths. A few tapestries and paintings on the walls. Simple, nice space, nothing fancy. Tables were 4-tops, some 3-tops, didn’t seem to have deuces.

Menu: looks like approximately 25 items – much larger than the 5 entrees they served previously. Couldn’t read the menu on the table through the window, but I did see that they are “opening in October”. Menu also stated “Brand New from the Blue Tent” – I knew I was in the right place. It will be interesting to see their prices since at their previous “location”, entrees hovered around $4-5 (!). Very tasty, very fresh food.

So, I will continue to call and post a report when I finally sample the goods.
