500 Fell St. @ Laguna
San Francisco, CA
This is an Italian neighborhood restaurant that I walked by for years
without ever going in. Then six months before I move I fall in love
with it. Go figure...
The decor may be a little cheesy to some: Chianti bottle candle
holders, Italian village murals on the walls, etc. Think "Lady and the
Tramp." USAToday.com described it as "the kind of quaint spot you'd
find in North Beach about 50 years ago."
There were eight of us all together. I can't tell you how much fun it
was to meet a few people even more obsessed about food than me! There
wasn't a restaurant, joint, dive, what have you that I could ask a
question about that someone at the table couldn't answer. Wow! But
on to the food:
Antipasto Misto: prosciutto, olives, roasted garlic, artichoke hearts,
and insalata caprese
Carpaccio w/ arugula, capers, and shaved parmigiano
Quattro Stagione Pizza (I know, unorthodox as an antipasto but who cares)
Gnocchi al Gorgonzola
Grilled Lamb Chops
Sacripantina from Stella's
You'll have to ask Dude in Mexico 'cause I left the menu in his car : )
While I enjoyed the food (natch, since I recommended it) I had a hard
time concentrating on it or even paying much attention because I was
having such a good time with the folk! Throw a little vino into the
mix and you have a perfect evening.
N.B. They *are* open on Sundays despite what every web site seems to say. But it seems that Sundays are his night off for people that care about this sort of thing.
I'll let everyone else comment before throwing in my 2 cents...
