Ice cream makers

The likes of Sour Cream and Prune and Traditional Milk at the Market Restaurant in Manchester, famed for its puddings, have whetted my appetite for some alchemy at home.

Any recommendations/caveats for icecream makers available in the U.K.? Should the ones with bowls you pre-freeze the night before be avoided?

More to the point, what about *flavours*? Ramsay's bitter chocolate and thyme sounds wonderfully subversive and sublime; might churn that one out for New Year's Eve.
