Those Much-Hyped Doughnuts on the Lower East Side

Ever since we heard that Mark "Doughnut guy" Isreal finally opened a real shop, my boyfriend has woken up in the morning chanting, "Doughhhhhhhnuts! Doughhhhhhhnuts!" This morning we trekked to the Lower East Side at 9 am to try them. They were good-but-not-scrumptious. I stopped after half a doughnut.

The doughnuts are hefty and extremely doughy, and the icing is definitely a cut above-- the chocolate tasted like real chocolate (Isreal uses Valhrona) and the orange icing was zesty and citrusy. But they were overpoweringly sweet, a little too oily for our taste, and the texture wasn't as heavenly as our favorite food mags have led us to believe. That said, my boyfriend still wants to try the ginger ones (today's were sold out before we got there).
