New Hwong Kok, Milpitas - cheap dim sum lunch

thimker | Jan 28, 200605:08 PM

Specializing in "Hong Kong Style Dim Sum," New Hwong Kok offers a cheap dim sum lunch for $4.80 + tax.
Each lunch comes with a container of rice porridge and a carton of assorted dim sum.

For the porridge, you can pick between "preserved egg and pork" or "preserved fish and peanut." There are five different assortments of dim sum that you can choose from. Each carton has 6-7 pieces of 3-4 different kinds of dim sum.

The boyfriend thinks they make the best egg rolls he's had in a while and he really likes their chive dumpling. We both prefer the egg and pork rice porridge. Except for the excellent turnip cake and the comforting porridge, nothing served here is extremely stand out for me. Also, the BBQ pork and chicken buns here are pretty mediocre, especially when compared to the really excellent ones you can get in Oakland.

BUT it is a fast and cheap place to go to if you are jonesing for a dim sum fix in the area.

The store has tables, but it's a small establishment and seating is a bit cramped. Usually, the boyfriend and I go for take-out. For a little over $10, we get a dim sum lunch for two with more food than we can usually finish. Since we pick different assortments and then share, we get a really nice variety of dim sums to eat. Although it's billed as "lunch," I think you can order it any time as we've gotten it for dinner.

The place has gotten good word of mouth among the Asian community, I assume, because lately there's always been a small line when I go. The line moves pretty quickly, though. A la carte items usually cost around $1.60 for items in groups of three (like buns or dumplings) or $.70 for single items (like egg custard tarts.) They also make take out party trays. Oh yeah, and this is a CASH ONLY establishment, I believe.
