Hungarian poppy seed roll (bread)

DH is on a quest to recreate a poppy seed roll that his mother used to make in the 70's. He found this recipe:

But used canned Solo poppy seed filling, as he remembers her doing. Well, it was not good. Too strong of a bird seed taste. I think he needs to add something to the filling, fruit, honey, sugar, something, but we have no idea what to do.

Any suggestions?
