After hearing rave reviews from numerous rest. resources I finally made the long drive last Wed. evening to El Hidalguense expecting to have a delicious dinner in an authentic Mexican (not TexMex) joint. They served horrible food. Have they changed owners or what? The margarita was from a mix without a drop of booze in it & no salt on the rim. Not knowing which cabrito (of their famous cabrito to order) we ordered both kinds (at $17.99 each). The English explanation was exactly the same def. for each. While we were waiting they brought out a dried up, very old and stale taquito. We were so hungry, we ate it although it was awful. Then came beans. They were actually quite good. Finally our cabrito came. My husband's was literally a plate of BONES over grilled onions. They were 100% vertebrate bones (either neck or spine)with very little meat. Some were so old & dry there was no meat on them at all. They tasted very old. My plate had lots of meat but was more like cabrito CHILI as it was as red as Hormel chili and had way too much chili powder. It was worse than my husband's and he wouldn't trade with me because it was worse than his bones. I do know what cabrito is supposed to taste like as my father cooks it occasionally, and I used to live in Brownsville and would go to the cheap dives in Mexico. There were no other guests there, so maybe they've gone downhill since the reviews I've read. We shouldn't have eaten it (but we were famished), as we both got a bad case of indigestion. We paid $50 for this very bad experience. Any opinions as to why they have such a good reputation yet served us such bad food. We were gracious to our waitress who was friendly to us, and paid without complaint. In retrospect, maybe we should have complained. At any rate, I wouldn't recommend this place to a dog.
