Hot tips in Napa Valley--Oct 2008

Non Cognomina | Oct 27, 200810:15 PM     2

I've come across some really good chow in Napa the past two weeks and had to share. With the state of the economy, I'm eating out less and eager to exchange info on good food finds with other hounds. I've included the prices at the time I dined.

La Taquiza in Napa (2007 Redwood Road) now has Carnitas! I'm a fan of their fish tacos, but they've tried carnitas out on the specials board and it's been overwhelmingly popular. It was described to me as "authentically braised in a traditional copper pot." I'll describe it as so tender, rich and flavorful I don't think any other carnitas will ever do! These are not to be missed! $2 per taco.

Redd in Yountville has "Steamed Buns" on their bar menu right now. They are "momofuku" style, where the bun is split and steamed separate from the filling and appear more like a sandwich than an oversized dumpling. But the pork is as tender as Reddington's pork belly, and the combination with hoisin sauce is a perfect autumn comfort food. Two good sized buns are served with asian slaw for $13.

Redd's also got a dang delicious cheeseburger worth mentioning on the bar menu. It's well seasoned (read "salted") and the beef actually tastes like beef (I'm a midwesterner and have strong opinions about beef). It is served with fresh baby romaine, sliced tomato, fresh red onion, cornichon, and a generous portion of greasy, disappointing onion rings. Still, at $14 it's not a bad deal.

Bouchon has a first course offering of "Boudin de Lapin et Figue"--a fresh fig and rabbit sausage (figs in the sausage), served with fresh figs and corn, polenta cake, and a tarragon jus. I love sausages, and I can't get enough of this one! The fresh fig in the sausage was a fun surprise, and the fresh sliced figs were perfectly ripe. It's a nice enough portion and rich enough dish to be a perfect meal for me. I hear they make this one in house, and it's on the regular menu. Can't remember the exact price, but I think it's around $15.

Happy Chowing!
