Hot Sauce & Panko moved into U-Lee's old quarters on the corner of Hyde and Jackson on the cable car line.
Never managed to try it when it was on Clement. But now it's walking distance for me and no more excuses.
The kitchen takes up nearly all the square footage. There are two tables where you can stand to eat your purchase. Otherwise, consider this take-out only.
One wall is devoted to display of hot sauces.
Not knowing what to order, I started at the top of the menu with the items marked as "best sellers". Green wings, 6/$6.89, Cilantro, Jalapeno, Ginger, Sesame Oil and House Spice Mix. The chile peppers turned out to be rather mild, but on this hot afternoon I washed them down with a ginger ale. Half wing flats and half drummettes, these were juicy and so succulent from brining before frying even the white meat of the drummettes. I'd thought they'd have a crisper coating but not bad. Apparently the panko goes on the fish and chips. I loved the green spicing, and will have to work my way through the rest of the offerings.
With the WTF attitude on its website, I did not expect to find three demure Chinese ladies working behind the counter communicating orders in Cantonese. They were quite sweet to me and interested in how I liked the food. The phone was ringing the whole time I was there and to-go orders were piling up under the heat lamps. When I left, one of the ladies said good-bye to me and "see you tomorrow for the next one!"
One parking tip . . . downhill on Jackson St., parking in front of the school is allowed starting at 6pm on school days. That could be the spot to park and grab a quick order here.
P. S. The ladies told me they still have folks coming in to ask where to find U-Lee. They don't know either.
