Hot Glazed Doughnut Action at Rolling Pin Donuts in San Bruno

katya | Aug 4, 200502:05 PM

I went to Rolling Pin Donuts in San Bruno for the second time last night in a week. It’s located in this funky little green building that looks like it’s been done up to be in Disneyland’s French Quarter. In other words, it looks awesome.

Anyway, we discovered fresh glazed doughnuts just out of the oven. Most of my doughnut experiences have been relegated to Krispy Kreme of late, and these were a revelation. These were bigger, doughier, and *a lot* less sweet (thank goodness) than Krispy Kreme’s, and so, so good. Those 75 cent pieces of heaven just melted in my mouth.

My visits were both in the 10-11:15 p.m. timeframe, so I’m not sure when hot doughnuts are available the rest of the day.

My boyfriend has had their chocolate sprinkle doughnut (hot fresh from the oven) a couple times and proclaimed it, “good, but average.”

In a taste test of Bay Area doughnuts that the SF Chronicle conducted last year, it emerged as one of its four favorites.

There is no seating inside but there are nice iron benches outside. Looking online, it’s been open since 1958. I’m not sure if it’s related to other Rolling Pin Donuts in the Castro and on Irving.

Rolling Pin is near Highway 101 so it’s worth a visit for a late night snack. An added bonus: it’s open 24 hours.
