Best Hot Chocolate in the Bay Area?

Krys Stanley | Dec 7, 200411:25 PM

Tis the season for me to have my cup of hot chocolate. What is your favorite?

Actually, I've had more than my one cup yearly ration already ... but, they were not really satisfying.

The best I had so far was at Emporio Rulli tonight ... Chocolato del Doge, a thick Venetian style.

I could see how this drink could really get screwed up, however Rulli did it right. Thick, not overly sweet and topped with a barely sweetened whipped cream that was almost like a creme fraiche. Done badly this could have been gritty, and syrup like. This version was very nice.

My problem was it wasn't warm enough for me. I like my hot chocolate ... hot ... not quite McDonald's lawsuit hot, but hot.

Rulli has regular hot chocolate also, but I haven't tried it.

The worst hot chocolate I had this year was at Starbucks because it was way, way too sweet. I like their mocha better which takes the edge off the sweetness.

Last year, in San Diego, I had some of the best hot chocolate in my life at Chuoa chocoletier. The chocolate was from Venezuela. There was also another version that had chili spice in it that was outstanding ... and it was HOT ... in temperature ... the drink was lovingly made by the owner.

Actually, the SD area has pretty good hot chocolate in general as you can find quite a bit of Mexican hot chocolate.

In SF, in the past, I used to love the hot chocolate at Just Desserts. I loved the thick cap of whipped cream on it.

So, where can I find that perfect cup of cocoa?
