Horrible Buche de Noel from Bay Bread

Bay Gelldawg | Dec 26, 200202:45 PM     4

Needing a festive dessert to take to a xmas eve party, I ordered a Buche de Noel from Bay Bread (the one on Pine near Fillmore) after seeing an article in the Chronicle food section.

What a horrible disappointment! They had no right to call this a Buche de Noel, which is a traditional French xmas treat - a cake roll with chocolate frosting. What I got from Bay Bread looked like a Buche de Noel on the outside, but turned out to be a piece of chocolate fudge, not rolled with cake at all, but disguised on the ends in a swirl design to create the illusion of a cake roll.

The Chronicle article described it as being made with chocolate mousse, but mousse is, by definition, light and fluffy with egg whites. This was heavy as lead. I am a chocolate lover and even I couldn't finish a very small slice.

To give them the benefit of the doubt, perhaps they were trying to improvise on a tradition. If so, it did not work! What a waste of $35!

Did anyone else out there experience this disaster?
