For anyone who likes Horchata de Chufa, the real stuff from Spain.
I have been hooked on it for years.
The indescribable milky, nutty coconutty taste is my favorite summer beverage.
You can actually get bottled Horchata in the U.S. now from www.tienda.com.
But the bottled has never been as good as the fresh stuff that they sell in Horchaterias in Valencia and Barcelona Spain.
So this lunatic set out to find a source of Chufas (alt.: ground almonds, tiger nuts, Yellow Nutsdege) himself. Chufas are actually a pretty good snack on their own, and turns out that they are planted by Wild Turkey Hunters in the U.S.
So I ordered 10 lb of Chufas from:
and went to town. They also have a good Horchata recipe on the site, but I winged it.
The long and the short of it is that I am now slurping my way through three quarts of delicious homemade Horchata that is cooling in my fridge. It was worth the fuss. And I still have 8.5 lbs of Chufas left.
Would love to hear from anyone else who loves the real Spanish Horchata de Chufa.
