Regarded by many Hong Kongees as one of their favorite street food, the nostalgic/iconic Hong Kong style sweet egg custard waffle cookies can be super addictive when prepared correctly. Usually made to order, these crispy/crunchy morsels, with a slightly fluffy hollow centers, exude lovely egg pastry aroma and provide great textural interplay in the mouth.
Once monopolized by an outfit in Market Village, a second competitor came along and set up shop in close by Pacific Mall a few years ago. I have not frequent the former for months due to the lousy service of their staff. Rude and full of attitude. As for the latter, I found the product a bit too sweet for my liking.
Then came along "Toast Delight" on the second floor of the Langham Mall on Kennedy, next to T&T. I walked past this newly opened gem today whilst searching for a BBQ Meat place that's supposed to be located nearby. Attracted by the aroma of freshly baked egg pancake, I cannot help but pop in and take a curious look. Small and clean, this micro hole-in-the-wall 'snack bar' is owned by a very friendly and knowledgeable middle age gentleman. I ordered a 'pack' for $3. Freshly made for me, the piping hot end product was so good! Possessing all the great characteristics I mentioned above, one bite of this delicious, not-too-sweet morsel brought back fond memories of my younger days in Hong Kong.
For those of you who happen to shop at this Kennedy/Hwy7 T&T location, do head over to the 2nd level and get yourself some. Remember to eat them when freshly baked and still piping hot, So yummy!!
