Anyone ever make homemade orange liquer (aka "44")?

The recipe I found sounds delicious:

one orange, scrubbed and dried
44 coffee beans
44 cubes of sugar
1 liter of vodka or eu de vie

Pierce the orange all over, then insert the coffee beans. Put the orange and sugar in a clear jar with the vodka. Store in a dark place for 44 days, shaking daily to ensure that the sugar melts.

It sounds easy enough, but has anyone tried it? I'm wondering how it would taste and how people would use it in mixed drinks.
