My "At home sous vide" experiment.

So while cleaning out my Mom's garage I came across one of these:


Its basically a slow cooker shaped device, but with a thermostat that goes from "Warm" all the way to "400", so it can be used as a deep fryer (mine even came with a fryer basket).

After filling it full of water, and turning in on to "Warm", I came back 30 minutes later and it was sitting at right around 131°, perfect for trying out sous vide on a steak.

My Reynolds vacuum pump took a dive, so I ended up just using water pressure to try and get as much air out of the zip lock bag as I could, and sealed it up!

60 minutes later....

I pulled it out, and gave it a quick sear on the cooktop to give it some browning and more of a "steaky" look.

ZOMG! It was the juciest, most perfectly medium rare steak ever! The post-bath browning is one place that I can definitely improve, it was lacking some of that savory Maillard goodness, but wow, I'm soooo doing this again.

So if you can find one if these Sunbeams, they work great! Kinda makes me wonder why Crockpots don't have thermostats.....
