Holiday Food-related Failures

truman | Dec 26, 201701:43 PM     87

Just for fun, let's share stories of our food-related failures from this holiday cooking season. I'll kick things off...

1. I tried a recipe for kugelhopf breakfast rolls from The Kitchn, and as usual subbed my Cuisinart in for the nonexistent stand mixer. The combo of the sticky dough and perhaps some leakage out the bottom of the bowl made the motor shut off. I was afraid it burned it out, but a 24h nap did the trick.

2. My 7yo had been saying for weeks that he wanted to get up on Christmas morning and make hot chocolate for DH and me. I asked him to use milk in mine, as I don't like the taste when it's made with hot water, and even went so far as to get out the big microwave-safe measuring cup the night before. We woke up at 8:15 to the smell of burning sugar... because he'd poured milk into the Keurig. I forgot we had k-cup hot chocolate mix, and that's what he had in mind - not the packets as I'd expected. There was no permanent damage; I flushed the machine with several cups of water and it seems fine. (And yes, I'm externally grateful that he slept so late!)
