On Sunday I went to Hog Island with two friends. It was my first time sitting down in that space and I found it to be very pleasant. I sat in the area where they are shucking, cooking and selling.
I have no idea how my friend got us seated because there appeared to be no host. They were completely slammed and I was surprised to see how little kitchen staff there were (1 cooking, 2 shucking).
We had the ($13)Hog Island Mix (6ea.) & ($12)6 sweetwaters, ($8)4 oysters Rockefeller, ($9 ea.)2 Grilled Cheese, ($6)and a mixed green salad.
The oysters were shucked perfectly--lots of juice, hardly any grit, well chilled. The Rockefellers were a little bland, but the spinach was nice, and the grilled cheese sandwiches were Amazing! I had seen them mentioned on Chowhound before and was glad to have ordered them. They are a 3 cheese pressed rustic sandwich and the bread has pieces of melted scallion in it. The salad was a light composition of innovative greens.
The waiters were extremely busy and although our sandwiches were slow in coming out they remained friendly, accomodating and communicative.
I would go here over and over again and reccomend it to everyone.
