Some chowhound friends were in town, and someone suggested an impromptu chowdown at Hobey's coffee shop for breakfast this am....since one of the visitors loves chicken-fried steak and Hobey's is supposed to have some of the best in town. My husband was skeptical, telling me privately: "Its a crappy locals' casino in Sun Valley; how good can it be?" (Sun Valley is not nearly as refined as its Idaho namesake, if you get my drift...). But DH had to work this anyway, and I wanted a chance to spend some time with my friends whom I see too rarely since my move to
Vegas, so I went along. And I'm glad I did. I'm not a big chicken-fried steak fan, but I tasted a bite and I must admit it was quite tasty. I had french toast; it was delicious with a hint of cinnamon in the batter. The accompanying bacon was perfectly cooked. A couple of our party had waffles, and they looked delicious as well. I noticed everyone had clean plates at the end of breakfast! The country-fried steak lover was quite satisfied. Service was reasonably fast considering how busy they were, and refills of coffee came before I thought to ask. Best of all, the price is very reasonable: a huge breakfast for five was around 40 dollars including tax and tip. My friends say that the steak house there at Hobey's also has some good steak and lobster specials. I say check it out for good old-fashioned diner food at a great price! Hobey's is on Sun Valley Blvd maybe a mile or so from the Clearacre exit off of 395 north of Reno (Clearacre becomes Sun Valley Blvd).
