BYO Lobster and BYO Conch transformed into lunch! With our seafood purchases from Good Fortune in tow https://www.chowhound.com/post/good-f... , we headed to Ho Kee Cafe. This looks like a casual cafe, yet the quality of the cooking rises above the cramped and humble interior. Though a Hong Kong-style specialist, the restaurant is too small to have live seafood tanks, so customers are allowed to "bring your own".
I especially loved the lobster deep-fried and dusted with salty egg yolk. The House special tofu and Barbecue pork cheek rocked. Our conch was stir-fried with sweet and crunchy snow peas. The Cantonese style roast duck’s tasty enough but the duck itself is larger with more breast meat that’s coarser-grained and not as tender as the Reichardt Duck Farm product so familiar in San Francisco Chinatown. Also, it was too wet from added juices.
Overall, very satisfactory. Yet where I'm told Ho Kee really shines is the menu of "private kitchen" dishes that require advance order. Any experience with these?
