Hiyashi Chuka @ Ryowa Ramen House, Mountain View

Earlier this month I stopped in Mountain View to try the warm weather-only hiyashi chuka, $8.50, cold ramen salad. This was the best one yet, made with the slippery and chewy handmade special noodles.

Offered a choice of spicy or regular sauce on the side, I went with spicy. And, it was! I must have gulped about four glasses of cold tea with it. But the complexity of the sesame paste and other seasonings rounded out the heat and I couldn't help but continue eating through the pain. This was topped with julienned shreds of omelet, roast pork, chicken, cucumber, red ginger, sesame and vinegar marinated jelly fish, tomato, and preserved cabbage hearts, plus shredded nori, wakame, half a hard-boiled egg, and scallions. Each bite had so much going on and was different from the next. I never got tired of it and finished the whole heaping plateful.

When I was there, I asked how long this would be on the menu. At that point it was through the end of the month. I just checked again, and they told me that it will probably be offered for the next week, but not certain after that. Get it before it's gone till next year!
