I am planning a big bash for my mother's 50th and want to take her out to a top flight restaurant to celebrate. We went to Babbo recently for my parents 25th anniversary and it was great. I thought the portion sizes would be rather small, however when ordering several courses it turned out to be quite fulfilling. But this bears the question- Why is it that it seems like higher end restaurants that charge tons of money seem to skimp on portions? Obviously part of the reason is because they want you to order several dishes, thus pumping up the bill. I am not saying every dish should be a monstrosity. When going out it is great to be able to sample many different dishes so I can see where smaller portions do have their positives. However, I think entrees should be somewhat satisfying.I have seen pics of the food at some of higher end places (Del Posto, Eleven Madison Park, Gramercy) and the portions seem miniscule. Just looking for some confirmation on this.
Restaurants I am considering are Del Posto, Gramercy Tavern, Gotham Bar and Grill, and maybe one of the Boulud restaurants. You know the typical high end restaurants constantly discussed on the board and in publications.
Which higher-end restaurants serve the best portion sizes? If I am going to shell out a lot of money I do not mind at all. I just want to feel like I had a great meal, experience, and it was money well spent.
