I haven't seen this mentioned here yet, so thought I'd pass it along.
About three weeks ago, a new full-size Chinese supermarket opened in Hempstead, Long Island...and I do mean a suburban style supermarket, not a small Asian market like the one on Rt. 107 in Hicksville.
It's comparable in size and selection to the Hong Kong Supermarket on Main Street in Flushing, and while stronger in some areas is weaker in others. The large fruit & vegetable section is in my opinion superior to that in Flushing, and the entire store is clean, well-organized, and new. There's also a fairly large fresh seafood department.
In a concession to the neighborhood, which is certainly much more Central American and African American than Asian, there's also an aisle of Goya products and a decent selection of such items as frozen collard greens and the like. This, combined with the fact that about 40% of the store is 'American' products, means the selection of Asian products is not quite as large as in Flushing, but still vastly larger than anything else I've found on LI.
I'll still be making a lot of trips to Flushing, but can now run and pick up some May May Bakery vegetarian pork buns, along with most other things I need, with a quick five minute drive!
