healthy chow in San Francisco

Too many restaurants use too much butter or oil, or depend on major carbs to make you feel fed. Surely, though, in San Francisco it must be possible to eat healthier chow than that. I'm not necessarily talking health food places -- just chow-quality restaurants where you can pick something healthy, and where the waiter has some clue what you're talking about when you politely ask them to go easy on the butter and oil. Can anybody suggest some suitable places?
