New Haven -- weekday lunch w/ future father-in-law

He's a traditional guy. Likes bourbon and red Rhone valley wine. Was in publishing, now retired. I am inviting him to lunch to discuss my "intentions" with regards to his daughter.

I know next-to-nothing about New Haven dining, have only eaten at one of the (great) pizza places, Sal's I think it was. No particular cuisine in mind -- although American, French/Continental, Italian probably most appropriate -- just something nice without being too fancy/delicate/frou-frou.

If it helps NYC equivalents to what I'm looking for would be anything from 21 (although I'd happily avoid paying at the level of the $46 Cobb salad); to Gramercy Tavern or Union Square; to Babbo (if it were open for lunch); to Balthazar; etc.

Thanks much for the help.
