I'd heard about Haus Staudt in Redwood City on Chowhound quite a while back. Today we happened to be in the area so we tried it. They are only open for breakfast and lunch and are closed on Sunday. So we were lucky to be able to have lunch there today. The food reminded me of what I've had in Germany and also what they used to serve at the old Speckman's on Church Street in SF. The cafe is small and is housed in a large store/deli/bakery that sells every kind of German food, drink, and trinket imaginable, again reminiscent of the shop across the street from Speckman's.
My husband and I both had the goulash soup, which had a delicious, slightly sour and beefy flavor. I had German franks and potato salad. Two good-sized frankfurters were served with a side of mustard. Potato salad had a nice vinegary taste, which is the way I like it. My husband enjoyed his liverwurst sandwich, which also came with potato salad. Washing the great food down with a large, draft Spaten pils was perfect. Bill for two before tip was around $35.
