Hatsu Tsubomi (Tokyo) Report

My son and I stumbled into this rather elegant retreat on the 9th floor of an office building just south of the Akihabara station. We were glad that we did.

When the elevator opened up, we entered a garden with trees, chirping bird sounds, and a gurgling brook, with seven or so private screened rooms and a couple of individual tables near a host stand. The screened rooms were all filled with private parties, but the tables were empty, so we were seated immediately.

Set dinners start at about 5,000Y per person. We ordered a la carte for a total of 6,300Y.

We were given an amuse for a small charge that included six tastes, all exquisite. We ordered shrimp tempura (below average), shrimp and crab balls in a slightly alcoholic syrup (nice stuff), a very fine pot of rice, salmon, and roe, and a gorgeous whole dried red bream which was so juicy, and the skin was like eating crisped air. Sensational.

All in all, a rewarding experience.
