harlem cake man in brooklyn

i posted about this place in response to someone's red velvet craving...but wonder why it's never been discussed here.

it's on fulton st. in fort greene. there's no sign, but it's known as 'the harlem cake man' or 'raven cake man' (raven is the owner's name, i believe.)

cake by the slice or whole cakes special ordered. you walk in and see what's available. sometimes nothing is! (cakes at least. there are other things like brownies, sometimes tarts or something. i've never tried any of these.) seems like the cakes sell quickly. but you can ask what's coming next, when it will be ready.

red velvet is the most popular. i've only tried that and the german chocolate (each only once though). red velvet doesn't excite me that much in general, but every one else seems to love it. the cream cheese frosting is good. raven's is the only german chocolate i've ever tried, and i enjoyed it quite a bit. the cake seemed to have a little more than just chocolate going on, almost like a bit of a mocha flavor.

raven makes three layer cakes that are fluffy, but not light. the cakes are tasty and the frostings are quite good.

$5 a slice, but a slice could feed two. there's one table inside if you'd like to sit down. otherwise, take it to go.

anyone else tried the cake man?

if you haven't been, give it a try and let us know what you thought.
